No More Corn…But It’s in Everything!

by Erin on February 2, 2012

Christina shares…

My son is allergic to cows milk, and we recently learned he is also allergic to Corn! Which is in everything, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup. It is a filler that is not all that healthy either. Telling a 2 1/2 yr old you can no longer have Kix, Life or Fruit Loops has not been fun.

The cereals he can have are Cascadian Farms and Kashi, but they cost a lot. But compared to the diapers and carpet cleanings we were paying for before we learned of his corn allergy, I will take it. I am very thankful for Colorado Springs,  and the stores that carry healthy foods.

I was just informed by the school that when he starts pre-school, I will have to provide his drinks and meals-snacks.

To have people who understand we can’t just say hey lets go have a treat and have pizza, would be great.

Thanks Everyone,
Mom of 5

(Thanks for sharing your story Christina! You are a wonderful mo! -Erin)

I know how that feels! I just found out a couple of weeks ago that I am allergic to corn (& gluten & peanuts). At first I was just like, well, I can’t have the obvious things, like cornbread, and corn chips, and popcorn. But I was still having allergic reactions, and then it hit me – corn syrup, corn starch…I can’t have any of those either.
Sadly, though, I have to drive over 30 miles to shop at a health foods store. Our local stores apparently don’t care too much about their customers with food allergies.
It’s been difficult so far. I’ve had a couple of meltdowns where I looked at a restaurant menu & saw all my favorite foods that I can’t eat any more.
But I’ve determined that I am going to learn to cook yummy, healthy foods for myself, and enjoy being healthier. 🙂

Hi! I figured out I’m allergic to corn over a year ago. It can be hard but eventually you’ll figure it all out! For a great list of corn free and/or gluten free products go to http://www.corn-freefoods.blogspot.com. There’s a food product list on the right. Good luck and G-d bless!
