Slow Cooker Applesauce Recipe

by Tricia on February 8, 2013

Each week in my meal plan I intentionally include cooking fun. Simple, easy, on-hand cooking ideas to whip up with the children. I want to cook with them on purpose. Teach them to enjoy the process. So it has to be fun!

Tricias Slow Cooker Applesauce Recipe at FAB 1024x682 Slow Cooker Applesauce RecipeA couple days ago we decided to make some slow cooker applesauce. My daughter rinsed the apples. Then I carted the slow cooker, plate full of apples, bag to put the peels in and a knife down to the family room. We decided we needed to keep a watch on the snow and turned on Weather Channel.

As I peeled apples, she practiced close by using a dull knife to remove seeds from the cores.

  • 1 bag of apples (any will do really, but we like Gala)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • touch of cinnamon (approx 1-2 teaspoons according to the amount of apples you are cooking and your taste)
  • 1/2 cup of sugar (or your favorite sugar substitute)

  • Peel apples and chop into slices or bite sized pieces.
  • Place peeled apples in slow cooker.
  • Sprinkle remaining ingredients on top.
  • Cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 3-4 hours. Apples should be soft and easy to mash with a vegetable masher.

Serve warm as a side dish, as the main treat for tea time or for dessert with a scoop of ice cream. We started late and were a bit impatient to have ours with supper, so we yummed it up chunky style.
