Holly’s Food Allergy Safe Super Bowl Party

by Erin on January 27, 2012

So, you’re planning a big party for game day? Sounds easy enough, right? It is….unless you or your guest(s) have food allergies. Whether you’re cooking for you, your child, or another guest with food allergies here are a few suggestions and a sample menu that will help make the meal planning a bit easier.

Things To Do First

  • Find out which foods to avoid. Just ask your guest(or their parent) with the food allergy. If it’s you or your child then you already know the drill.
  • Find out exactly how severe the allergy is, and if it’s ok for other guests to eat it. For example, my 9 yr old is so highly allergic to peanut that he can’t even smell it. If we went to a party where they were being served we’d have to leave. On the other hand, some people with allergies aren’t that sensitive so you’ll have to evaluate it on a case by case basis.
  • Remember the number one rule if you’re cooking for someone with food allergies. Read All Labels!
  • Don’t throw the packages away! Even if you’ve read all the labels twice I still recommend that you hold on to them. Trust me, your food allergic guest will thank you for the peace of mind of being able to read the labels on the food you prepared. Please don’t be offended by this. It is way too easy to miss an allergen in a long ingredients list, and a second scan by someone who’s used to reading labels won’t hurt.

Suggested Food Allergy Safe Super Bowl Menu

  • Fruit Tray – You’ll have to buy the fruit & chop/cut it yourself because most premade ones have allergy warnings.
  • Dairy Free Yogurt Dip – Use 1 cup of Dairy Free Vanilla Yogurt with 1 TBSP of Honey, and 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon. Stir together.
  • Veggie Tray – This is the same as the fruit tray. Most pre-made ones contain allergy warnings on them.
  • Tortilla Chips & Salsa – Most store brands of Salsa are ok here, but make sure you read the labels. Check the labels on the chips also.
